Overview

Nabeeha Mohamed is a South African artist whose deeply personal practice explores identity, race and class privilege within post-Apartheid South Africa. Drawing on her experience as a woman of colour growing up within predominantly white social and cultural environments, Mohamed uses painting as a space for self-expression and reclamation. Bold colour, strangeness and a heightened sense of character run throughout her work, often set against domestic or familiar settings. These celebrations of identity are complicated by a playful critique of capitalism and the structures of class privilege from which she herself benefits, creating paintings that are at once intimate, self-aware and quietly unsettling.

Biography

Nabeeha Mohamed was born in Cape Town in 1988 and studied at the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town.

Selected solo exhibitions include Tending Bell Flowers, Gallery 1957, London (2023); Vanitas Woe, WhatiftheWorld, Cape Town (2023); Same Sky, Different Fruits, Gallery 1957, Accra (2022); Dressing Room, WhatiftheWorld, Cape Town (2021); and Sunshine on my skin is my favourite colour, SMITH, Cape Town (2020).

Recent group exhibitions include Bateekha, Gallery 1957, London (2026); Seeds of the Fig, WhatiftheWorld, Cape Town (2023); The Floral Impulse, David Castillo, Miami (2023); and Where do I begin, Stevenson, Cape Town (2022). Mohamed has participated in fairs including MiArt, Investec Cape Town Art Fair, Art Rotterdam, FNB Art Joburg and 1-54 New York, and has undertaken residencies at Gallery 1957, Accra; The Artist’s Press, White River; and Casa de Ilhabela, Brazil.
