Godfried Donkor, The World Reimagined

Globes to go in Bristol until 31st October

"The inspiration for my globe was the theme The Reality of Being Enslaved. I started by looking at, and thinking of, all the enslaved peoples of the world – currently, from antiquity and throughout history – and trying to imagine the most important preoccupation that they would have: namely, and by any means necessary, to flee from that state and take flight towards the ideals to which all humans aspire."

Godfried Donkor

‘The World Reimagined’, is an education organisation whose focus is transforming how we understand the reality and impact of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. On the 15th of October, they launched an art trail stretching across the city of Bristol with 10 stops featuring 103 globe structures on showcase. British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare CBE designed the form of the globe sculpture, which has been adapted by more than 100 participating artists including Godfried Donkor. Gallery 1957 congratulates the artist for being part of this extraordinary impactful project.
