Gallery 1957 is pleased to share that Godfried Donkor's solo exhibition, It's a Numbers Game, has been featured in The Observer.
Written by Tara Joshi, "The grid: on the borders between Essex and Ghana" reflects on Donkor's first UK institutional exhibition, currently on view at Firstsite, Colchester, and its exploration of history, empire, identity, power and resistance.
The article highlights the exhibition's links between Colchester and Ghana, bringing together the figures of Boudicca and Yaa Asantewaa as two anti-imperialist warrior queens. It also draws attention to Donkor's wider visual language, from reinvented heraldry and embroidered Financial Times pages to paintings of Ghanaian boxers and collages that place sporting histories in dialogue with the transatlantic slave trade.
As Donkor explains in the piece, "My practice is inspired by the space between spaces. If my work is sometimes perceived to be about identity, power and resistance, my practice is actually more interested in the spaces between those areas." The article positions It's a Numbers Game as a body of work shaped by ambiguity, historical memory and the imaginative possibilities that emerge between fixed narratives.
