Gallery 1957 Featured in the Financial Times

We’re delighted to share that Gallery 1957 has been featured in the Financial Times, in a richly observed feature by Patti Waldmeir exploring Ghana’s flourishing contemporary cultural landscape.

Reflecting on her return to Ghana nearly five decades after first arriving in Accra in 1980, Waldmeir traces the evolution of the city into a global hub for contemporary art, design and cultural innovation — while honouring the warmth, creativity and vibrancy that continue to define Ghanaian life. From the streets of Jamestown to the growing network of artist collectives, members clubs and creative spaces shaping the city today, the article positions Accra as a leading force within the international cultural conversation.

Gallery 1957 is highlighted as one of the city’s defining contemporary art spaces, with Waldmeir visiting the gallery during Serge Attukwei Clottey’s large-scale installation marking Gallery 1957’s 10th anniversary. The feature also reflects on the gallery’s longstanding commitment to championing contemporary African artists and building infrastructure for creative practitioners within Ghana and beyond.

Speaking to the Financial Times, Gallery 1957 founder Marwan Zakhem notes: “Something is happening in Ghana: it’s been happening for the past six or seven years, and it’s continued to grow. The contemporary art scene in Accra has now become a leading pivot in the world, and not just for Africa.”

We extend our sincere thanks to Patti Waldmeir and the Financial Times for spotlighting the energy of Ghana’s creative community and the continued growth of Accra’s contemporary art scene.
