In Gathering of Kingdoms, Benissan offers a reimagined take on Dennis Stock’s iconic 1970s photograph of a Ghanaian chieftaincy court. Central to the scene are two linguists, positioned prominently to represent the Chief’s speakers, while townspeople gather behind them. Through her embroidery on canvas, Benissan honors the complex dynamics of traditional governance, illustrating both the authority of the Chief and the collaborative spirit that defines Ghana’s communal structures.
This work speaks to the intersection of history, memory, and governance in Ghana. By combining photography with the tactile nature of textile art, Benissan challenges traditional modes of representation, offering a contemporary reimagining of Ghanaian royal and communal life. This piece is a meditation on the enduring power of cultural memory and the way leadership and community remain intertwined in shaping identity and society. Through this vibrant composition, Benissan continues her exploration of the strength of traditional governance and the collaborative nature of community-building.
