In this captivating embroidered work, Ghanaian artist Rita Mawuena Benissan draws on traditional embroidery techniques to weave cultural chronicles, creating a profound dialogue across generations. Drawing from her robust background in photography which informs her selection of archival images that serve as the foundation for this artwork, Benissan interlaces different narratives through her tapestries of time.
This work features a historic photograph of Asantehene Osei Tutu Agyeman Prempeh II, taken in 1958 by German photographer and art historian Konrad Helbig. In the image, the Asantehene is seated beneath a green ceremonial umbrella, surrounded by his court. This same green umbrella is still being used by the current Asantehene, symbolising the enduring traditions of the Ashanti Kingdom.
