Ukuthula I draws us into a quiet, almost spiritual space. White plastic spoons form a gentle arch around the perimeter of the canvas, framing a grey-toned landscape at the painting’s centre. The composition recalls sacred architecture, a chapel apse or ancestral gateway, directing our gaze inward. Within this monochrome world of misty mountains and heavy skies, a single pair of small, golden slippers lies nestled in dark green grass. Their size suggests childhood, their placement a kind of offering, memory, or invocation.

The Zulu word Ukuthula translates as “peace,” and this work feels like a meditative act; a tribute to silence and reflection. The interplay of discarded spoons and sacred symbolism resonates with Wonder Buhle’s broader ecological and spiritual concerns. The artist transforms everyday remnants into portals, encouraging viewers to honour what is overlooked, whether in nature, in materials, or in memory.
