Each portrait in Godfried Donkor's series 'Battle Royale II: Pantheon of Champions' gives the viewer a glimpse into the dynamic and colourful public spaces and fighting arenas of Jamestown, Accra which gave birth to and shaped these ‘boxing gods.’ Donkor's work examines the social-historical relevance of boxing as ‘the art of self-defence.’
Here we see the focused gaze of former Ghanaian professional boxer Azumah ‘Zoom Zoom, the Professor’ Nelson. Donkor conveys the boxing champion's grit in the motion of a powerful swing towards a punching bag, situated in in one of the many outdoor training gyms of Jamestown.
